Somalia reaffirms commitment to migration cooperation at Khartoum Process Conference in Cairo

Thursday April 10, 2025

Mogadishu (HOL) – Somalia has reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing migration cooperation and combating human trafficking at the Second Ministerial Conference of the Khartoum Process in Cairo on Wednesday under the Chairmanship of Egypt.

Somali Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Amb. Ahmed Moallim Fiqi addressed the conference, which brought together nearly 50 countries from Europe and the Horn of Africa, along with key regional and international organizations.

“Over the past decade, the Khartoum Process has remained both relevant and responsive to the dynamic realities of migration,” he said. “It continues to serve as a vital platform for constructive dialogue, partnership, and action.”

Minister Fiqi expressed Somalia’s appreciation for Egypt’s leadership during its Chairmanship and reaffirmed Somalia’s strong engagement with the Process, particularly during its tenure on the Steering Committee while temporarily replacing Sudan since October 2021. He welcomed Sudan’s return and the restoration of its seat, framing Somalia’s role as one of African solidarity.

The Somali Foreign Minister also emphasized the importance of a comprehensive and inclusive approach to migration governance. He underscored national efforts to strengthen coordination, develop rights-based policies, and address the root causes of irregular migration through a gender-sensitive lens.

“The approach to migration must involve enhanced cooperation, focusing on migrant protection, return and reintegration, and dismantling criminal networks,” he added.

Minister Fiqi praised Egypt’s leadership during the Chairmanship and thanked the European Commission, African Union Commission, and ICMPD for their continued support.
