Last year, every third candidate placed by talent solutions provider Careernet was a woman. Pune, Hyderabad, and Chennai are the top three cities in terms of employing female applicants, and Delhi/NCR hired the least female workforce among tier-1 cities.

Careernet's report 'Moving Towards Equality – An Overview of the Hiring Trends for 2022' brings out insights into the Indian female workforce across industries.

According to data from the World Bank, in 2020, women's labour force participation rate was 47.9%, compared to men's rate of 75.6%. Additionally, women are more likely to be employed in low-paying and low-skilled jobs and are underrepresented in leadership positions.

However, companies are recognising the benefits of having a diverse workforce and are actively working towards achieving gender balance in their organisations.

The report shows companies' hiring sentiment across a range of experience levels and industries, spread over six tier-1 cities across India. The findings are based on Careernet's internal data, career portals of employers, and month-on-month hiring trends. The company analysed a sample size of about 16,000 placements last year.

The data shows that the average percentage of total women candidates hired saw a steep drop outside of tier-1 cities, from 31% to 12.5%.

Key employment sectors recording significant hiring include GICs/GCCs - BFSI, GICs/GCCs - telecom / manufacturing / automobile, IT services, domestic enterprises (retail / engineering / manufacturing / pharmaceuticals, etc.), and BFSI.

Further, the Indian startup ecosystem accounts for the lowest percentage of female hiring – 22%.

“Women's participation in the workforce is crucial for the growth and development of the country. Closing the gender gap in the workforce is not just a moral imperative but also makes good business sense. By creating employment opportunities for women and supporting their entry into traditionally male-dominated industries, we can not only drive economic growth but also promote gender equality," said Anshuman Das, CEO and co-founder, Careernet.

The highest proportion of women being recruited by organisations is among freshers. 35% of the fresh talent from colleges placed in 2022 were women.

Female candidates having 0-3 years and 3-7 years of experience constitute 27% of the total hires in their respective bands.

Some of the top job roles in demand by women include: software architect, accounting & finance, DevOps engineers, application developer / software developer, automation developers, big data, business analyst, cloud computing, data scientist, etc.

Female tech talent is primarily placed in cities that drive tech innovations, viz. Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Pune.

"While the industry sentiment towards hiring women candidates continues to be positive, we are optimistic about the opportunities that lie ahead for women in various job roles. In particular, we anticipate a high demand for women in the technology, banking, services, manufacturing and healthcare sectors," Das said.
