He announced the completion of a new draft of the Jamaica National Energy Plan, spanning from 2024 to 2050.

This comprehensive plan incorporates global and domestic trends to steer Jamaica’s energy sector towards sustainable growth.

The Minister outlined a series of policy reviews, including renewable energy, bioenergy, carbon trading, nuclear energy, electricity, energy from waste, and energy efficiency and conservation.

These revisions aim to align Jamaica’s energy agenda with its long-term goals and emerging trends.

A path to economic growth

Highlighting Jamaica’s progress in renewable energy, Minister Vaz emphasized the increasing role of solar and wind power in the energy mix.

He portrayed the transition to clean energy not only as an environmental imperative but also as an economic opportunity.

By investing in renewable energy, Jamaica can reduce its dependence on fossil fuels, spur job creation, and stimulate economic development.

The Electric Vehicle Policy emerged as a key component of Jamaica’s energy strategy. Minister Vaz outlined its objectives to promote the adoption of electric vehicles and reduce vehicle emissions.

By targeting private motor-vehicle users, public transport fleets, and governmental vehicles, Jamaica aims to facilitate a significant transition to electric vehicles by 2030.

Advancing sustainable transportation

In line with Jamaica’s commitment to clean energy, Minister Vaz highlighted efforts to modernize the Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) bus fleet. This initiative includes the integration of electric and natural gas vehicles, signaling a shift towards sustainable transport.

The introduction of compressed natural gas buses not only enhances the JUTC fleet but also improves passenger comfort and contributes to reducing Jamaica’s carbon footprint.

Minister Vaz reiterated that sustainable transport is pivotal for Jamaica’s future and emphasized the importance of transitioning to clean energy to achieve this goal.
