FAIRMONT, W.Va. (WBOY) — West Virginia’s first patriot marker was presented at Pricketts Fort on Sunday afternoon by the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).

The Colonel Morgan Morgan Chapter presented the marker at Pricketts Fort State Park to commemorate America’s 250th anniversary. It is placed on a rock that sits in front of the Pricketts Fort entrance with a message commemorating the achievements of those who fought for America’s independence.

During the ceremony, West Virginia State Sons of the American Revolution Color Guard presented flags and sounded off rifles, while WVU’s Mountaineer Fife and Drums assembly played music from Revolutionary War times.

Barbara Channell, regent of the DAR’s Colonel Morgan Morgan Chapter, discussed why Pricketts Fort was the chosen location for this marker.

“We picked Pricketts Fort because it’s an active fort and it’s going to be very well exposed for generations to see for a long time,” Channell said. “We hope that it will spur interest in the upcoming anniversary.”
