Russian strikes on Ukraine leave at least 20 dead

At least 20 people were killed in Russian missile and drone attacks against Ukraine overnight, Ukrainian officials said on Saturday, as Moscow has stepped up its bombings in recent days.

The increase in Russian assaults has come after Washington suspended military aid and intelligence-sharing with Kyiv follow the Oval Office clash between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

"This is what happens when someone appeases barbarians," Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said after the latest Russian airstrikes. "More bombs, more aggression, more victims," he added in a post on X.

Moscow's military struck the middle of a town in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region where Russian forces have been advancing, killing at least 11 people, including five children, and leaving a further 30 injured, the officials said. Three more people died and seven were wounded in a separate drone attack on the Kharkiv region in the northeast.

The missile strike in Donetsk targeted the town of Dobropillya, Zelenskyy said in a post on X.

"After emergency services arrived at the scene, they launched another strike, deliberately targeting rescuers," he said. "It is a vile and inhumane intimidation tactic to which the Russians often resort."

Eight apartment buildings, an administrative facility and a fire truck were damaged, Zelenskyy said.

Moscow's latest airstrikes came after Russian forces launched 67 missiles and 194 drones against Ukraine on Friday, bombing mostly energy and civilian infrastructure, in the Kremlin's first large bombardment since Washington halted aid and intel-sharing to Kyiv.

The United States stopped sharing military aid and intelligence with Ukraine following a public clash between Trump and Zelenskyy in the White House on Feb. 28.

On Friday, the U.S. National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency said it had suspended sharing satellite imagery with Ukraine. The Ukrainian military has used the images to track the movements of Russian troops and assess infrastructure damage, according to Ukrainian defense publication Militarnyi.

Zelenskyy on Saturday said Ukraine is "fully committed to constructive dialogue" with the U.S. ahead of talks scheduled for this week in Saudi Arabia. "We hope to discuss and agree on the necessary decisions and steps," he said in a post on X.

"Ukraine is determined to do everything to end this war with a just and lasting peace as soon as possible," he said.
