Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Friday urged the police, lawyers and other stakeholders to step up measures to increase the state’s conviction rates in criminal cases.

He was speaking in Agartala during the launch of five mobile forensic vans, offering state-of-the-art technology to analyse forensic samples on site or in the same district itself.

CM Saha, who is also the Home Minister, said even though Tripura fares better than most other states in crime data, the law enforcement agencies, lawyers and all other stakeholders needed to increase the conviction rates.

“Tripura is the third lowest in crime data in the country as per the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). So, the crime situation is better here. However, we should increase the conviction rate in criminal cases,” the CM said and urged for more “serious” steps.

With five additional vans, all eight districts of Tripura now own high-end vans equipped with a mobile crime laboratory that expedites evidence collection by Crime Scene Investigators (CSI). The mobile labs will help in sampling, processing and storage for further investigation and legal proceedings.

CM Saha also noted that crimes against women are taken up by women police stations set up across the state. He said his government is committed to empowering women economically by providing them 33 per cent reservation in all government jobs, including Tripura’s own counter insurgency force – the Tripura State Rifles (TSR). He highlighted the self-employment opportunities offered for the women in the state through Self-Help Groups and other innovative schemes like Lakhpati Didi.

CM Saha said that significant steps are being taken to curb child marriages, dowry-related cases and bring down their number to zero.
