Woodland Joint Unified School District teachers voiced their frustrations at a board meeting Thursday after a salary increase for Superintendent Elodia Ortega-Lampkin was approved.
Thursday night, the board voted to increase the superintendent’s salary to $307,770.
Ortega-Lampkin's initial four-year contract was signed for $260,000 in March of 2022.
Since then it went up to $286,624 in 2023.
The approved salary is a 7.3% increase from her 2023 salary and a 20% increase from her four-year contract signed in 2022.
The vote comes as the Woodland Education Association (WEA) and district negotiate a new three-year contract for its teachers.
Rebecca Bernard, president of WEA and a Woodland teacher, said they haven’t been able to reach a new contract with the district.
The teacher’s union represents about 500 teachers and staff.
“We're really pushing for increases in salary and benefits to keep teachers here in Woodland," said Bernard.
Bernard said they are asking for a 14% increase over two years, more health benefits and resources.
"We lose teachers every year to the districts around us, and it's really disheartening," said Bernard.
In a statement released following a negotiation session earlier this month, the district said the pay raises would cost more than $25 million dollars.
It added in part "In a year where the district has already had to layoff classified employees and is dealing with high uncertainty in Washington D.C. regarding cuts to federal funding, WEA's coalition proposal will further lengthen the time needed to reach a final agreement."
The district has already announced some layoffs for the next school year.
The board also approved a raise for the associate and assistant superintendent.
The teacher’s current contract expires in June.
The next meeting between the district and the teacher’s union is scheduled for April 17.
