Of the nearly 70 bridges identified nationwide by the National Transportation Safety Board as needing vulnerability assessments for ship strikes, three are in Delaware.

The Reedy Point Bridge, the St. Georges Bridge, and the Summit Bridge are all under the control of the US Army Corps of Engineers.

The bridge list was issued by the NTSB as part of an update of its investigation into the collapse of the Key Bridge in Baltimore following a ship strike nearly one year ago.  It issued urgent safety recommendations to 30 organizations and owners who have oversight of 68 bridges in 19 states, concerning the vulnerability of the spans to ship strikes.

The Delaware Memorial Bridge is currently undergoing an upgrade to its pier protection system which will cost nearly $100-million. It's expected to be completed in September.
