The unemployment rate edged down slightly in Bloomington-Normal in January compared with the same month a year ago.
The Illinois Department of Employment Security reported Friday the Twin City labor market recorded a jobless rate of 4% in January, down a tenth of a point from January 2024, and the same rate as the Champaign-Urbana labor market.
Nonfarm employment of 93,200 for the month was unchanged from a year ago. Employment increased in the Government, Private Education-Health Services, Financial Activities, Information, Mining-Construction, Retail Trade, and Transportation-Warehousing-Utilities sectors. Payroll numbers decreased in Manufacturing by 2,500 positions. Leisure-Hospitality, Professional-Business Services, and Other Services also was down.
Over the year, the jobless rate decreased in 11 metro areas and increased in one for the year ending January 2025, said IDES.
