‘Beads for Special Needs’ provides education and employment opportunities for special education students
D’IBERVILLE/ST. MARTIN, Miss. (WLOX) - Mardi Gras may be over, but the North Bay Civitan Club of D’Iberville & St. Martin isn’t letting those beads go to waste.
The group took in nearly 2,500 pounds of beads from six different drop-off locations across South Mississippi for its annual ‘Beads for Special Needs’ community service project.

The project aims to provide education & employment opportunities for high school special education students. They’ll use the unwanted beads to learn life skills in business and finance by recycling the throws.
“And that’s what’s most important is that we’re putting an impact not only on them but on the community as well, who’s getting a chance to serve by giving back their Mardi Gras beads,” North Bay Civitan Club of D’Iberville & St. Martin Club President Keith Wilson said.
“We’ve enjoyed collecting them. The superstars have enjoyed bringing them in, playing and giving a purpose to those with special needs,” A Latte Friends Marketing Manager Angele Mills said.
The beads were distributed to Long Beach High School and St. Martin High School special education programs. This year, the group collected its highest amount of beads since before the pandemic and they say they look forward to collecting even more next year.
