Best for: Tour the Mombasa Terminus, the modern railway station, and pass the symbolic metal elephant tusk sculptures on the bustling Moi Avenue, built in 1952 to commemorate Queen Elizabeth II's visit. Discover the well-preserved Fort Jesus, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the nearby Butterfly House before travelling to Haller Park to observe hippos, impalas and giant tortoises. Traverse Kenya's largest national park, Tsavo East National Park, as part of a game safari to spot Africa's Big Five.
Best time to visit: December to February is hot and dry, but wildlife concentrates around water sources, making it one of the best times to spot them in their natural surroundings.
