New report explores economic impact of Alberta greenhouse production
As of 2024, estimate puts province’s industry under more than 24.7 million sq.-ft of glass and plastic

The Government of Alberta released a report earlier this year exploring the economics of production in the province’s greenhouse industry to shed light on the sector’s impact.
The report, released in February and called ‘Economics of production and marketing greenhouse crops in Alberta 2023,’ estimated the gross revenue generated by the province’s greenhouse industry that year was approximately $278.3 million, “with an investment or total value of assets of about $440.8 million.” It also notes that the province ranks fourth in Canada in terms of total greenhouse area, behind Ontario, British Columbia and Quebec respectively.
As of 2024, Alberta’s greenhouse industry is estimated to sit under approximately 24.73-million square-feet of glass and plastic, according to data supplied by the Alberta Greenhouse Grower’s Association (AGGA) for the report.
“Most of the operations are highly diversified and are equipped with the most modern equipment to achieve production efficiencies,” the report says. “Presently, the number of people employed by the industry is approximately 3,500 full-time and 1,500 part-time.”
Commissioned to serve as an ‘up-to-date economic benchmark,’ the report aims to support the work of policymakers and newcomers to the industry looking to deepen their ‘understanding of greenhouse productions costs and returns.’
The report was prepared by senior crop economist Emmanuel Anum Laate and funded by the governments of Canada and Alberta through the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership.
