Labour Government records joint lowest approval rating after welfare cuts row
The Government is struggling in the polls even though the Prime Minister has enjoyed a bump over the Ukraine crisis.
Keir Starmer’s Government has recorded its joint lowest approval rating since sweeping to power in July.
Only 14% of respondents in the latest YouGov poll gave the thumbs up to Labour in the wake of Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ Spring Statement.
The Prime Minister's personal approval improved recently in the wake of Donald Trump becoming US President again and withdrawing support for Ukraine.
But the last few weeks have been difficult on the domestic front, with welfare and the economy causing him problems.
Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall caused controversy after announcing billions of pounds of cuts to disability and sickness benefits.
Chancellor Rachel Reeves, blamed by senior Labour figures for the welfare cuts, then confirmed the forecast for economic growth had been slashed.
With 14% of people approving and 68% disapproving, Starmer’s Government is sitting at a net rating of minus 54.
April is likely to be a difficult month for the government, with a range of bills going up for voters.
Concern about the impact on growth of the hike in employer national insurance contributions is also on the rise among MPs and MSPs.
But MPs hope the big rise in the National Living Wage will result in low income voters feeling better off.
