Phnom Penh (FN), Apr. 7 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet responded to recent remarks made by opposition leaders Sam Rainsy and Mu Sochua, who urged him to personally negotiate with the United States regarding the 49 per cent tariff imposed on Cambodian goods.
The premier spoke on Monday (Apr. 7) at the inauguration of the USD 37 million Morodok Techo flyover in Phnom Penh.
Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet stated that he does not blame Sam Rainsy or Mu Sochua for their suggestions, as neither of them has ever served as prime minister—even for a single second—and therefore, they do not understand how the role actually functions.
Samdech Thipadei underscored, “I don’t blame him [Rainsy]. I accept that he criticised me, but we can’t fault someone who has never sat in the prime minister’s chair. He doesn’t know how a prime minister works—he’s just imagining it."
Samdech Thipadei said that Sam Rainsy, who has no official duties, attempts to handle everything on his own, whereas the prime minister must lead and coordinate with many skilled officials and generals.
On the occasion, Samdech Thipadei also criticised Sam Rainsy for exploiting the suffering of others, noting that even the recent tragic deaths of Cambodian workers in a building collapse in Thailand were used by the opposition for political gain. He said such actions reflect a lack of virtue and dignity, adding that this “old politician” is less respectable than even the emerging younger political parties.
The premier continued, ““If you know something for certain, speak with confidence—but if you are unsure, do not speak recklessly in public. Shame on you. Do not forget that he attacked me, while at the same time sending a message to millions of people, asking them to judge his abilities and moral character. Of course, he insulted me, and a few hundred people reacted—some commented, liked, criticised, or supported him. But do not forget that millions of educated and thoughtful Cambodian citizens are also watching. Why is this old man behaving more immaturely than the young person he’s attacking?”
Samdech Thipadei further recalled Sam Rainsy's brief tenure as Minister of Economy, which lasted only a year before he was removed by his own party.
