MaryAnn Keprta Srubar • August 5, 1930 - April 8, 2025

Love prevailed over war and business school, and on September 21, 1948, MaryAnn and Bill were married in Hungerford, Texas. They lived and sharecropped with Bill’s parents in Muldoon their first year of marriage before moving to a small two-room tenant house until 1951, when they built their first home and barn for $6,200. The family quickly grew with the birth of their 5 children, Allan, Teresa, Billy, Louis, and Patti Jo. Bill and Mary Ann traded homes with Mary Ann’s mother and managed the operation of the Keprta farm and ranch, eventually buying it as their own. Over the years, MaryAnn and Bill farmed cotton, corn, and sorgham, and raised cattle until their retirement. The family worked together in the fields tending and harvesting crops, baling and hauling hay, working cattle, gardening, tending chickens, lambs, horses, and pigs, picking grapes, dewberries, and pecans. Cooking was her love language. There was always something on the stove or in the oven.

MaryAnn always found time to attend all her children’s and grandchildren’s school and sports activities, dance recitals, as well as overseeing 4H and FFA projects for the Wharton County Youth Fair. She especially loved watching East Bernard Volleyball and would ride the bus with the team to out of town games. Many fun times were spent with extended family and friends going fishing and camping on the coast, and hosting barbecues, swimming, and boat riding on the San Bernard creek. MaryAnn also loved to travel and enjoyed trips to Chicago, Hawaii, Washington state, and British Columbia, in addition to local Texas adventures with Senior Friends. MaryAnn was a life-long member of St. John Catholic Church in Hungerford, serving on the Altar Society. Her undying faith and charity were evident to all who knew her. She was an active member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, the KJZT, and the American Legion Auxiliary. She volunteered as a catechism teacher and served as an election judge for many years.

Due to declining health, MaryAnn moved with Bill to the SPJST Senior Care Home in Needville. Her family remained the center and joy of her life, and she always looked forward to the next visit from family, especially her great grandchildren.

MaryAnn was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Adolph (Sonny) Keprta Jr, husband Bill Srubar, and her beloved son, Louis Srubar. She is survived by her children, grandchildren, and 19 great grandchildren.

The family would like to express our gratitude to her home health caregivers, the staff of SPJST Senior Care Home in Needville, and to Houston Hospice for their compassionate care.

Funeral services will begin with visitation at 10 a.m. Saturday at St John Catholic Church in Hungerford with rosary recited at 10:30 a.m. and funeral Mass at 11 a.m., all at St John Catholic Church with burial to follow in the St John Cemetery in Hungerford.
