Delaware jobless rate remains steady at 3.9 percent.

Delaware’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in August remained unchanged from July at 3.9 percent. Delaware ranked 27th among the 50 states and the District of Columbia and was  tied with Texas and Wyoming

There were 19,000 unemployed Delawareans in August 2018 compared to 21,800 in August 2017.

The US unemployment rate matched Delaware at  3.9 percent in August and was unchanged from July 2018. In August 2017 the US unemployment rate was 4.4 percent, while Delaware’s rate was 4.6 percent.

In August 2018, seasonally adjusted nonfarm employment was 462,300, up from 461,900 in July 2018. Since August 2017, Delaware’s total nonfarm jobs have increased by a net gain of  7,500, a rise of 1.6 percent. Nationally, jobs during that period increased 1.7 percent.

In a commentary accompanying the news, the Delaware Department of Labor stated that “Delaware’s unemployment rate seems to have stabilized, at least for now, at 3.9 percent. That would be one sign of an economy at full employment. Another would be a non-increasing labor force participation rate.”

The department noted that the workforce participation rate has fallen from 63.2 percent in 2016 to 62.6 percent in August.  “This likely reflects both a complete return of those discouraged by the lackluster growth in the aftermath of the recession and increasing retirements in an aging population,” the labor department reported.

The Labor Department reported did note that the current rate for African American teens stands at 23.5 percent, compared to an overall teen rate of 14 percent.
