A furniture company in Saco, Maine, is giving people with disabilities equal employment opportunities with the help of a partnership with a nonprofit organization.
Maine Woodworks has 14 employees, and nearly half of them are people with disabilities. The furniture shop uses locally sourced wood and environmentally friendly finishing to create the furniture, and all of it is made to order. At Maine Woodworks, there are no barriers, special stations or special rules, and employees can proudly do their jobs in a totally integrated work space.
Creative Work Systems has been helping people with disabilities in Maine for more than 50 years. It ensures that people with special needs are treated equally and given competitive wages at companies like Maine Woodworks, which has been a social extension of the nonprofit for 27 years.
