An expert in employment law said workers who get medical marijuana cards could soon have problems on the job.

Unlike alcohol or prescription drugs, marijuana is still illegal at the federal level. But unlike alcohol, it stays in a person's system for 30 days and could show up on a workplace drug test.
“So if you are an employee and you test positive for marijuana, and it's from 25 days ago, and you're not currently under the influence, that's what employers need to think about with respect to the workplace policy,” said attorney Tedrick Housh, of Lathrop Gage.
Many firms already have restrictions on workers who may be on prescriptions from operating certain kinds of machinery or performing certain kinds of work.
Some human relations directors say they expect the medical marijuana policies to be similar to the guidelines for workers who may have a chronic medical condition.
