House Considers Extension for Unemployment Benefits

Lawmakers consider legislation to extend benefits for those who are out of work.


Press Release Service – Wired PR News – The House is considering legislation that will help those who are out of work whose unemployment benefits will soon run out. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), lawmakers are expected to vote on an emergency bill that would extend unemployment benefits an additional 13 weeks.


Andrew Stettner with the National Employment Law Project research and advocacy group is quoted by the AP as stating of the record number of individuals currently experiencing longer periods of unemployment throughout the country, “It smashes any other figure we have ever seen. It is an unthinkable number.”


Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus is further quoted in the report as stating of the need for assisting those who are unemployed, “We need to keep our unemployed neighbors from falling into poverty. We need to figure out how best to make our safety net work.”
