The inception of Sanchi as a sacred center is attributed to the Mauryan emperor Aśoka. His reign in the 3rd century BCE is considered instrumental to the spread of Buddhism throughout the Indian subcontinent.

Bhojpur Temple: Located in the town of Bhojpur, the Bhojpur Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The site is revered for its massive but incomplete Shiva lingam, which is one of the largest in India. Ujjain’s Mahakaleshwar Temple: Another unmissable site is Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain. It is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, which are highly revered in Hinduism. Khajuraho Temples: Another prominent attraction is the Khajuraho Group of Monuments. These are noted for stunning temples done in intricate erotic sculptures and elaborate carvings. Built between 950 and 1050 AD by the Chandela dynasty, these temples are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The complex consists of Hindu and Jain temples.
